University Students Visit Nuvia

15 December 2008

In December, Nuvia hosted a visit to Harwell by students from the University of Surrey. These students are studying for an MSc in either Radiation and Environmental Protection or Radiation Detection and Instrumentation. During the morning, talks were presented on the Approved Dosimetry Service’s sixty years of experience in dosimetry, Nuvia’s GROUNDHOG detector and Nuvia’s contribution in dealing with the Po-210 incident in London in 2006.

As well as visiting some of the dosimetry facilities, Nuvia staff also acted as a liaison for visiting the REVISS cobalt store, Harwell Scientifics’ laboratories and UKAEA’s decommissioned DIDO reactor.
Feedback from the students was very positive

- “The generosity and enthusiasm shown by all those staff we met was fantastic and I know that everyone else on the trip felt like myself that they had got a great deal out of the day. It is always nice to see how the theory learnt in lectures and labs is applied in the real world, and both the talks in the morning and the tours in the afternoon served the purpose of understanding the roles played by health physicists very well.”

- “The Nuvia visit yesterday was amazing! The staff were great, really looked after us and showed us as much as they could in the time we had! It was especially useful to see the various types of jobs that are all linked with these sites as well.”

Nuvia is a sponsor of the MSc in Radiation and Environmental Protection at Surrey University.
