14 May 2007
NUKEM secures its position as the key supplier to Norwest Holst on a major nuclear design and build project.
NUKEM Limited, renowned for its design & engineering capabilities, has won the contract to complete the nuclear design & safety case for the Silos Direct Encapsulation Plant (SDeP) in support of Norwest Holst Limited (NHL), which has recently been awarded the main design & build contract from BNGSL (British Nuclear Group Sellafield Limited).
The total value of the project is estimated at £170M and is one of the most significant contract awards for NUKEM. The duration of Stage 1 of the contract is 14 months and will be lead by an integrated BNGSL/Contractor design team based out of NUKEM's Chadwick House offices, Risley and supported by NUKEM’s team at Westlakes Science & Technology Park in Cumbria.
The overall project scope includes the modification of the existing SDeP facility and the provision of a new Box Transfer Facility to treat and package intermediate level waste retrieved from the “wet” silos into an encapsulated product that is suitable for long term storage. The project involves the strip-out of existing redundant plant, development of the scheme design together with underpinning R&D work and the construction; installation & commissioning of a new plant.
Marketing Director Keith Collett commented: “We are delighted to have been awarded such a major contract in support of NHL. This is a significant milestone for NUKEM as the project represents the largest major design & build contract to have been awarded for Sellafield under the NDA”.
