NUKEM wins Heat Exchanger Deplanting Pilot Project

02 March 2007
NUKEM Limited demonstrates its credentials by securing a significant decommissioning contract from BNGSL.
In 2006, BNG Sellafield Limited (BNGSL) confirmed NUKEM Limited to be one of the chosen contractors to undertake decommissioning tasks at Sellafield. This has been clearly established by the recent award of the Calder Hall Heat Exchanger Deplanting Pilot Project, at a contract value of approximately £4M. This project is directly in support of the Nuclear Decommissioning & Major Project Group at Sellafield.
NUKEM’s team of Jacobs, Hertel, Mammoet, J Bryan Victoria and Border, brings together an excellent mix of project management, decommissioning and technical expertise.
The Calder Hall Heat Exchanger Deplanting Pilot Project covers the removal and lay down of two heat exchanger vessels including all of the associated pre-works and preparations. Work will involve geotechnical surveys and testing, civil mechanical and electrical works, demolition, vessel deplanting, preparation of the vessel laydown area, and transport and safestore of the vessel.
As this is a fuelled reactor, the project is complex with many different requirements; constraints and interfaces. NUKEM is looking forward to working with the Calder Hall Project Team to safely and successfully deliver this challenging project.
The award of this contract, places NUKEM in an ideal position to establish a platform from which to explore further nuclear decommissioning and engineering opportunities. John Ball, NUKEM’s northern Regional Director said “By the winning of such a high profile BNGSL contract, NUKEM has established itself as a key supplier in Cumbria.”
