NUKEM Wins Recognition for Safety Standards at Aldermaston

02 June 2006
Safety comes first for NUKEM Limited in all its activities and this was recognised at a meeting of the AWE Construction Contractors Site Managers' Meeting on Monday 22 May, when the Company was announced the winner of AWE 's "Contractor of the Year Award" for 2005/6; an award presented to the contractor who has demonstrated the best record on safety.
RWE NUKEM has been working under contract to AWE Aldermaston since 2003 on the design, build, installation and commissioning of a state-of-the-art waste treatment plant. Throughout the project the team and their sub-contractors have achieved over 450,000 man-hours of work without a lost time accident. In itself this is a fantastic safety record and one that has been recognised on many occasions by AWE.
The award is not just about accidents however. It is calculated on a scoring system covering a range of measures relating to safety, including: accident rate, participation in the CSCS scheme, attitudes to safety, generation and implementation of safety initiatives, attendance at safety meetings, scorings from safety walkabouts and so on. .
Ken Jackson RWE NUKEM’s Director of Major Projects said, “We are absolutely delighted with this award and I am proud of the team we have at Aldermaston. They have maintained the highest safety standards throughout the project, and I am convinced that the attention to safety has helped them deliver our commitment to AWE ahead of schedule. They reflect the whole safety ethos of NUKEM and will hopefully provide inspiration to other contractors.”
