British Energy Award RWE NUKEM major contract at Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station

29 June 2005
RWE NUKEM is delighted to announce the award of a three year contract from British Energy. The project will involve modifications to the existing Sizewell B radwaste plant to permit the safe encapsulation and storage in drums of ILW ion exchange resin and to improve the station’s LLW processing capability.
British Energy and RWE NUKEM have worked closely together over the past two years. Both organisations have made major resource investments to develop a safe, elegant and economic solution to the site waste processing needs. This positive working relationship is reflected in the contract arrangements which have established a partnering approach with the joint aim of providing a safe and effective plant at the lowest cost.
RWE NUKEM’s successful concept includes:
- an overpack to shield ILW drums within the facility
- a fill head successfully developed by RWE NUKEM across international projects
- off-site construction and testing of the new operational cells
- cells delivered to site in modules for erection
RWE NUKEM is also installing a new 20 tonne crane to improve drum handling capability. The whole control system is to be replaced with a state of the art SCADA system used to integrate the encapsulation plant, drum store, resin transfer and grout powder delivery.
RWE NUKEM’s Marketing Director, Keith Collett, said
“We are very pleased to be entrusted with this project. It is key to the waste processing capability of Sizewell B and we are confident of a safe and successful outcome. A sound basis of technical, commercial and client/contractor understanding has been built up over the last 2 years. We look forward to continuing this partnership with British Energy and delivering this and hopefully further contracts for the Company.”
