AWE & RWE NUKEM's Safety Street Donation

09 June 2005

The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) and principal contractors, RWE NUKEM, have marked their construction safety performance by donating £250 to Reading's Safety Street initiative.

This joint donation is in recognition of achieving an accident-free record during the two-year construction period of AWE's new wastewater treatment plant at Aldermaston.

Safety Street, the interactive children's safety centre at the Cattle Market near Reading town centre, has announced its closure later in the year due to funding problems. The donation will help towards the centre's operational costs between now and the end of July, during which time, some 1,000 visitors are still expected.

Jon Fowler, Head of Construction at AWE said: "Safety in all our activities at AWE is our number one priority. We think it's great to educate young minds about accident avoidance in such an exciting and stimulating environment and are pleased to give our support in aid of Safety Street's continued operation until the end of the summer term."

Safety Street provides life-sized street scenes including a building site, railway line, quarry and canal bank where school parties are able to see and discuss everyday situations which present potential hazards, both inside the home and out.

Visitors to this stimulating facility explore safety issues and accident prevention techniques, including road safety, safer cycling and how to make an emergency call.

Bob Mannix, RWE NUKEM's Senior Project Engineer on the wastewater treatment plant project added: "Safety awareness is a very important aspect of all construction projects and we are pleased to mark this achievement with a donation to this very apt initiaitve."

Richard Tyndall, Chair of the Safety Street Trustees, said: "We are most grateful for this donation. It is generosity such as this that has enabled Safety Street to function for as many years as it has.

"Safety Street's whole purpose has been in the prevention of avoidable accidents - and AWE and RWE NUKEM have done exactly what we're all about."
