The RICS Awards 2004

24 May 2004
RWE NUKEM received a commendation at this year's Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors award ceremony for the remediation work we carried out at Harwell's Southern Storage Area. The ceremony was held on Friday 21 May in a packed ballroom at London's Landmark Hotel and Kevin McCloud of Channel 4's "Grand Designs" presented the awards.
Douglas House, Oxford, scooped the RICS Building of Year Award and Chatham Maritime and the remediation of the Southern Storage Area at Harwell were commended in the Regeneration section.
Originally an RAF ammunition store, from 1946 the SSA (Southern Storage Area) was used for a variety of waste storage and handling operations and for the permanent landfill burial of mixed chemical, beryllium and low level radioactive waste.
Through a thoughtful and thorough remediation process, including the removal of over 1,200 live bombs, the land is now indistinguishable from neighbouring greenfield land.
"A fascinating example of how to return contaminated land to general use. Those involved are to be congratulated on their strategy of consultation with so many and varied stakeholders." - John Walshe, Judge
