On the 17-19 March 2004, RWE NUKEM organised a workshop on behalf of the Department of Trade and Industry for the Contact Expert Group (CEG) of the nations involved in Improving the Management of Spent Nuclear Fuel and Radioactive Waste Management in Russia.

The workshop was held at the Milton Hill Conference Centre near Harwell. Key issues addressed included the assessment and management of project, safety and environmental risks in the decommissioning of redundant nuclear submarines and the remediation of contaminated sites. The workshop was chaired by Dr. Alan Heyes of the DTI, who is also the programme manager for work undertaken by RWE NUKEM on Andreeva Bay, submarine decommissioning, BN-350 sodium cooled fast reactor decommissioning in Kazakhstan and Arctic Military Environmental Cooperation (AMEC) programme support.

The workshop included delegates and official representatives from the various CEG member countries, including USA, Russia, Norway, Finland, Germany, France, Italy, corresponding states, including Japan and Canada, and associated organisations, such as the European Commission and EBRD. In total there were 63 delegates. The majority of the workshop comprised technical presentations. These were given by various Russian organisations involved in the programme and by the Western donor nations, on their practices and requirements for such assessments. RWE NUKEM staff made two presentations on behalf of the UK.

The workshop dinner was held at Worcester College, Oxford.

The workshop was successfully concluded on Friday 19th with full agreement on the various ways forward to incorporate western and Russian best practice to ensure the effective management of all classes of risks in current and future joint projects.
